Ya Es Hora (YEH) is the largest and most comprehensive effort to
incorporate Latinos as full participants in the American political
process. Its multi-layered integrated campaign provides a
comprehensive approach that links naturalization to voter
participation and Census enumeration under a single message: “it’s
time.” HRC believes that Latinos are important to the future of our
communities and our country and we want to pay a part in helping them
to become citizens.
We are proud to be the first and currently only national LGBT
organization in YEH. This campaign gave us an opportunity for us all
to come together. We were joined by many organizations locally,
including ACORN, Caesar Chavez Service Club, Center for Social
Advocacy, Empower San Diego, Justice Overcoming Boundaries, NALEO, the
San Diego LGBT Community Center, St. Paul's Cathedral, SEIU, and
Univision. With a combined number of roughly 70 volunteers, we we
able to assist about 40 people with one-on-one applications and many
more with general information on obtaining citizenship.
What ever our background we have a set of common hopes and dreams and
face a common set of challenges from health care, retirement security,
to protection from job discrimination and immigration. By helping
with one of the most important events in the lives of these future
voters – becoming a U.S. citizen – we changed the hearts and minds of
this important constituency.
